The death of former Alice in Chains bassist Mike Starr has inspired an outpouring from his former bandmates, other musicians and fans.
Jerry Cantrell and Sean Kinney — both former Alice in Chains bandmates — released a statement asking for time to mourn the loss of their friend:
“Jerry and Sean are mourning the loss of their friend and ask that the media respect their pr*v*cy – and the pr*v*cy of Mike’s family – during this difficult time. Their thoughts & prayers are with the Starr family.” Starr was found dead in a Utah home on Tuesday (March 7). The cause of death is still unknown, but Starr was arrested in February for felony possession of a controlled substance: Six Xanax and six painkiller pills. At the time of his arrest he reportedly identified himself readily to police, saying, “Hey officer, have you heard of Alice In Chains? I used to be the bass guitarist for them. We are down here in Utah… putting together a new band.”
In 2009, Starr appeared on the third season of “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew.” Pinsky himself tweeted his reaction to news of Starr’s death:
Other Twitter reactions came from former Guns N’ Roses drummer Steven Adler (himself an alum of “Celebrity Rehab”): “R.I.P. Mike Starr!! Such a sad day! ,” he tweeted.
Velvet Revolver drummer Matt Sorum took the opportunity to warn kids about drug abuse: “”Drugs and alcohol aren’t a joke. Please take care of yourself and respect yourself. We lost Mike Starr today. Rest in Peace man.”
And Motley Crue bassist Nikki Sixx, who has himself struggled with addiction, tweeted this brief message: “RIP Mike Starr. Another fallen Soldier to addiction… .”
But perhaps the most pointed message came from pro wrestler Chris Jericho, who tweeted: “Sorry to hear about Mike Starr’s death. Amid all of the joking about tiger blood and winning, let’s not forget that drugs kill people.”
